SEO for ChatGPT

According to SimilarWeb, ChatGPT is ranked #6 globally and received 6.2 billion visits in October 2025. Wow, and it’s growing! People are using ChatGPT for research, programming, generating ideas, finding answers, and much more, and for many people, it’s starting to replace Google as the de facto search engine.
So, what does this mean for SEO? Is it dead or dying a long, slow death? No, I wouldn’t go that far, but as ChatGPT continues to gain traction, we’ll see more people shift to using it as a search engine.
Yesterday, I saw something new in a client’s Google Analytics account. One of their contact form conversions came from ChatGPT. I dug a little deeper, and low and behold, the submission is legit. I know I’ve been using ChatGPT increasingly to find answers to my questions, and at ArcStone, we’ve been researching how this will change search and what you can do to increase your brand’s visibility in ChatGPT.
Given this monumental change in user behavior, you may wonder if optimizing your website or brand for visibility in ChatGPT is possible. Well, the quick answer seems to be a resounding, Yes!
ChatGPT may not rank things in order like Google or Bing, but it does recommend and mention services, products, and brands. In fact, according to Neil Patel and Eric Siu from Marketing School, ChatGPT recommends brands and products based on 82 factors, with six showing a strong correlation.
ChatGPT Optimization Factors
- Relevance – Websites that speak positively about your brand, product, or service, such as comparison platforms and industry blogs.
- Brand mentions – The frequency with which your brand, service, or product is mentioned on the web.
- Reviews – Positive reviews and ratings contribute to your trustworthiness and credibility.
- Authority – Sites linking to your site build domain authority and influence visibility.
- Age – Older websites and domains with history tend to rank better and have better visibility.
- Recommendations – When other websites mention your product or service, it enhances your chances of being featured in ChatGPT’s recommendations.
For those well-versed in SEO best practices, local SEO in particular, this list may look very familiar. These factors are also influential in optimizing your website to secure good keyword positions in Google and Bing. The good news is that if you’re running an effective SEO campaign, you may also see success in ChatGPT. Similar to SEO, however, it will take time to come.
Optimizing for ChatGPT
- Focus on question-based keywords.
- Embrace long-tail keywords (specific, longer phrases, usually three words or more).
- Answer your questions concisely and clearly.
It’s important to remember that SEO is vital to having a thriving brand online. Following SEO best practices will not only increase your visibility in Google and Bing, but it may also improve your exposure in ChatGPT.
