Navigating Google Ads Verification: What Nonprofits Need to Know

If your nonprofit uses Google Ads or has a Google Ad Grant you may have received a message asking you to verify your account, and for those of you new to Google Ads, this can be confusing. We get it. The good news is you’re not alone. We’ve gotten many questions about it over the last few years. In this post, we’ll explain verification in this context and why it matters, and we’ll walk you through the verification process. Let’s get started!

Google Ads verification is part of Google’s broader effort to promote trust and transparency across its advertising platform. For nonprofits, it’s even more important to stay in good standing to ensure your ads keep running — and that you can continue connecting with supporters, donors, and the communities you serve.

What Is Google Ads Verification?

In short, Google Ads verification is a process that confirms who you are and what your organization does. It’s designed to prevent misinformation and fraudulent activity and to make sure all advertisers — including nonprofits — are being transparent with users.

Why Nonprofits Are Being Asked to Verify

Even if you’ve been using Google Ads or the Ad Grant for years, new policies mean that all advertisers may be required to verify their identity at some point.

Google started verifying political advertisers running election ads in 2018 and expanded the program to all in 2020.

If you don’t complete the process by the deadline, Google may pause your ads or suspend your account. Keep in mind that Google provides a 30-day window to start the verification process and another 30 days to complete it.

This isn’t meant to penalize you. It’s about building a more secure and transparent advertising ecosystem.

What You’ll Need to Provide

The exact documents may vary, but for most nonprofits, you’ll want to have the following ready:

  • You’ll need a government-issued ID for someone authorized to manage your Google Ads account.
  • Your nonprofit’s official registration or 501(c)(3) documentation.
  • A website that clearly communicates your mission and services (this is important for the Ad Grant, too!)
  • Info about your leadership team and operations, if requested.

How to Complete the Verification Process

Here’s what the process usually looks like:

  1. Log into your Google Ads account after receiving the verification email or alert.
  2. Click on the notification to begin the process.
  3. Follow the prompts to upload your documentation and answer questions about your organization.
  4. Submit and wait — submissions are typically done within five business days but sometimes take longer.

Pro tip: Make sure the information you submit matches your website and other public-facing platforms.

What Happens If You Don’t Verify?

Unfortunately, if you ignore the request or miss the deadline, Google will pause your ads, including your Ad Grant. Sometimes, your account might even be deactivated until verification is complete.

That can mean losing valuable visibility when your cause needs it most.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Mismatched names or addresses across documents.
  • Expired or blurry ID photos.
  • Not responding in time (mark those Google Ads emails as important!).
  • Using a personal email that’s not tied to your nonprofit domain.

Take your time, double-check the info, and don’t rush it.

The Upside of Getting Verified

While it might feel like extra work, verification has some real benefits:

  • It shows Google and your audience that your nonprofit is legitimate and trustworthy. You’ll be included in the Google Ads Transparency Center.
  • It can improve your ad performance — especially with increased transparency in ad disclosures.
  • You’ll be ready for future changes as Google updates digital advertising policies.

To Sum it Up

For mission-driven organizations, visibility is everything. Google Ads is an effective tool for reaching the right people at the right time. Completing verification is a small but important step to make sure that continues.
