The holidays are a time of giving. Giving to friends, family, and giving to our favorite nonprofits. There are far too many incredible nonprofits in the world doing the hard work to make the world a little better.

The issue of racial equality and racially-fueled violence in the United States is one that we’re passionate about and one that requires education, honesty, and systemic change. Critical Race Theory is essential to creating the change we so desperately need in the systems that exist in the United States.

The following are just a few of the local Minnesota nonprofits fighting for racial equity and supporting our Black communities.

Minnesota Freedom Fund

The Minnesota Freedom Fund works to expand access to resources and justice for those who are unfairly oppressed by the justice system. Their mission is to help those who cannot afford criminal bail and immigration bonds and to seek to end discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing.

They operate with the goals of creating immediate relief for our MN communities and to fight for systemic change within Minnesota’s criminal justice system.

Black Visions MN

Black Visions MN is a Black-led, Queer and Trans-centered organization working towards its mission of organizing powerful and connected Black communities to dismantle systems of violence in Minneapolis.

With a vision of a healed and liberated Black future, Black Visions MN is driving forward campaigns like Yes 4 Minneapolis and Path Forward for sweeping change in the Minneapolis police department and building real safety for Black communities.

Minneapolis NAACP

The Minneapolis NAACP is a chapter of the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. They are fighting for the rights of Black communities and are working to get the much-deserved justice for the many Black lives taken by police. Their work includes providing housing assistance for Minneapolis residents who are facing housing discrimination or restrictive practices.

Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence

Black communities across the country face the very real threat of violence at the hands of the police. Most notably here in Minneapolis was the public killing of George Floyd in May of 2020. Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence is an organization dedicated to providing support for the family members and friends of those who have been brutalized by law enforcement.

Black Immigrant Collective

Black Immigrant Collective is a network of Black immigrant justice organizers, advocates, journalists, and workers’ rights organizers with lived experiences as immigrants or refugees. Their work spans across legal help, policy change, mutual aid, and more. Learn more about Black Immigrant Collective’s initiatives here

We believe that change can be made through the hard work that these and many other organizations are doing every day. In order to help support positive change towards racial equity in Minnesota, learn more and donate to the organizations above.
